Airport upgrade ‘a big step’

Tourism in Wyndham will get a boost, with Avalon to become Melbourne’s second international airport. The federal government will amend the lease to allow a new international terminal to be built. LeadWest chief executive Anton Mayer said the announcement “is a big step for the west”.

Cops grab $19m in drugs

Cannabis crops have been seized from new housing estate properties in Tarneit during a massive police operation that has resulted in a haul of $19 million of drugs. Police have raided 46 properties in Melbourne’s north and west as part of Operation Taxa since July 30. They have arrested 19 people. Assistant Commissioner Steve Fontana said the aim of the continuing operation was to dismantle “grow houses” in a bid to crack down on organised crime syndicates involved in the production of cannabis.

Husband, wife lose licences

A husband and wife from Point Cook have had their licences suspended after being caught speeding on Dunnings Road. Police stopped the woman, 32, at 7.10pm on Monday after detecting her travelling at 102km/h in a 60 zone. She was fined $599, lost six demerit points and had her licence suspended for six months. Her husband, who was driving behind her, was caught at 93km/h and was fined $458, lost four demerit points and had his licence suspended for one month.
