UNCERTAINTY surrounded the election of Wyndham’s mayor on Monday night, with only one candidate publicly declaring her intention to nominate for the role.
The results were not known before the Weekly went to print, but it is understood Crs Adele Hegedich and Heather Marcus were nominating for the position.
Cr Hegedich told the Weekly she would put her hand up to be mayor, saying she only made her decision in recent days.
Cr Marcus refused to comment, but sources said she was a candidate for the position.
Of the remaining nine councillors, seven said they were not interested in being mayor this year.
Five-time mayor Shane Bourke and Harrison ward’s Cr Glenn Goodfellow said other commitments meant they could not dedicate the time to being mayor.
Newcomers Peter Gibbons, Intaj Khan, Gautam Gupta and Peter Maynard said they did not have enough experience and wanted to use this year to learn more about being on council.
Cr Marie Brittan, returning to the council after a three-year absence, said she was yet to make a decision.
Cr Bob Fairclough refused to comment. The Weekly was unable to contact Cr John Gibbons.
