Bowling Bees stung by big loss

WERRIBEE is down in the dumps after losing to bitter rivals Altona in the Bowls Victoria premier division at Chirnside Park on Saturday.

The Bees arrived at the Hive confident of causing an upset in the western suburbs derby, but were disappointing in a 93-72 home defeat.

It was the Bees first loss on their synthetic surface this season.

“I thought we could beat them, but we weren’t up to scratch and they were too good for us on the day,” Bees skip Snowy Barker said.

“They just seemed to play better early on and were in front all day.

“We challenged them late, but never kept the intensity up.”

The A’s left Watton Street with a three-rinks-to one victory and much sought-after bragging rights.

The Bees’ only winning rink was Darren Christie, who bounced back to form with a 27-16 win over young gun Matthew Rennex.

“That was the upside of it all,” Barker said.

“They got into a bit of form which was good.”

One of the major issues that needs to be ironed out for the Bees is their lack of consistency.

Their rinks are hot and cold and yet to consistently perform as a group.

“We just don’t play consistent enough overall as a 16,” Barker lamented.

The Bees hit the road in search for their first away win of the season when they play Lalor on Saturday.
