BUILDING codes in Wyndham Vale, Point Cook, Tarneit, Truganina and Williams Landing have been tightened following the release of new bushfire area maps.
Building works for houses in these areas now require a bushfire attack level assessment, which rates properties from low to extreme risk.
Bushfire-resistant construction must be specified in plans. Wyndham mayor Heather Marcus said the identification of bushfire prone areas was a recommendation of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.
She said the new requirements were introduced to minimise the risk to communities during a fire.
“The rapid expansion of our municipality makes it easy to forget that there are still large parts of Wyndham which are native grassland and prone to fires during the warmer months.”
