WYNDHAMVALE’S hot start to the Williamstown and District Cricket Association A1 turf is showing no signs of abating.
The Falcons consolidated their place in the top-four with a hard-fought 23-run win over Gellibrand at Digman Reserve on Saturday.
The victory was set on day one when the Falcons defied the tricky batting conditions to post a competitive 228 off 68.5 overs.
But they had every right to dread the second day’s play, having to defend their total in 37-degree heat and batsmen-friendly conditions.
The Falcons never stopped working in the field, even when Gellibrand held the upper hand at 2-84 with the Keatings — Nick (49) and Michael (78) — in full control.
Once that partnership was broken, the Falcons found it easier to make inroads as Gellibrand lost their last eight for 69 runs.
The Falcons’ next test will be against Williamstown Imperials at Wyndhamvale in a one-dayer on Saturday.
In B1 turf, Bellbridge missed out on its chance to go top after losing a low-scoring affair to Deer Park-Ardeer at Mossfield Reserve.
