Meerkats cop it sweet for good health

A GROUP of playful meerkats at Werribee Open Range Zoo had their annual vaccinations last Thursday.

One-year-old pups Keon, Barwa and Ukuza, father Gidi and aunt Courtney weren’t overjoyed by the visit from the vets, but forgave all once they were given a few special treats afterwards.

Zoo spokeswoman Kym Carter said meerkats could be “feisty and elusive little creatures”, so vets and keepers had to look out for sharp teeth and claws.

Vets also gave the popular animals a weigh-in and claw trim.
