Centre to close in April

Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre will close on April 14 to allow redevelopment to begin, subject to the council awarding a contract for the work at its next meeting. Last Monday, councillors flagged April 14 as the centre’s likely closing date, giving residents due notice. The council also plans to close the centre’s creche on March 10 and spa, casual hydrotherapy, steam, lap and recreational swimming facilities on March 26. Learn to swim classes and group exercise classes finished last week.

Road works aid safety

Derrimut Road will be made safer for drivers, with VicRoads starting safety works which include the installation of wire rope safety barriers and guardrails, and the removal of trees near the road. In the five years to June 30, there have been 27 casualty crashes on Derrimut Road between Leakes Road and the Western Freeway, including two fatalities.

Five-car crash witness call

Police are appealing for witnesses to a five-car collision on the Princes Freeway last week. The incident occurred between Fitzgerald Road and the Kororoit Creek Road overpass about 6am on Friday. Police believe a vehicle changed lanes and collided with another car, causing it to spin out of control before it was struck by a third vehicle. Two more vehicles — one a prime mover and trailer — were then involved in the collision. Police are trying to identify the driver and type of vehicle which changed lanes. Motorists stopped briefly at the scene before driving off. Minor damage was caused to three cars, but no injuries were reported.

Information to Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.
