Wyndham council seeks jobs, roads cash pledge

WYNDHAM Council says there are a “number of gaps” between its vision for the East Werribee employment precinct and a draft plan released last November.

In a submission to the Growth Areas Authority, the council has called for an increase in the number of jobs created in the precinct and for caps on residential growth.

It also wants the state government to provide a written guarantee that money from land sales in the precinct will be used to fund infrastructure in the area, and that the Sneydes Road interchange will be built in one stage.

Cr Peter Maynard said the government and GAA needed to assure residents infrastructure and employment promises would be delivered.

“We need stringent caps and triggers so local jobs can be realised and there is infrastructure to support them,” he said.

“A timeline must be provided by the government to indicate what infrastructure will be delivered when.”

The council’s submission came after residents raised concerns during community information sessions this year.

These include that the government would not build roads and other infrastructure before residents moved into the area, that the government would be unable to attract businesses to the precinct, and that there was no community consultation before the draft plan was released.

Cr John Gibbons said he would like the GAA to provide a timeline for the construction of the Derrimut Road railway station, which was flagged in the draft plan, and for work to be carried out on a Hoppers Crossing Princes Highway interchange to improve traffic flow. “There is an urgency to do something about it. Go up there on a Saturday and the traffic is backed on to the highway,” he said.

A submission by the Committee for Wyndham called on the GAA to address traffic flow around Hoppers Crossing train station and the freeway.

The committee also wants upfront investment in health services in the precinct.
