GDFL: Tenacious Centurions find win on the flipside

WERRIBEE Centrals has rebounded from its below-par performance in the Geelong and District Football League season opener to crush Thomson by 36 points in the second-round form flip.

The Centurions players were disappointed with what they served up in the opener and left no stone unturned in their preparation and on match day to come away with a courageous road win.

From the first bounce, the Centurions looked like a side that was hellbent on redemption, with ruckman Steven Morgan giving his onballers first use of the ball and Michael Cassidy and Brayden Montebruno producing many a pack busting run to catapult their side into attack. Kicking with a strong breeze, the Centurions took a commanding 34-point lead into the first change, holding the hosts goalless in the process.

The Centurions’ big test came in the second term, fighting and scrapping into the wind, and somehow winning the quarter.

They were tenacious, running in twos and threes with the ball and making their tackles stick without it.

With a 39-point half-time lead, it was evident the Centurions were going to be hard to stop.

That was all but confirmed after a breathtaking eight-goals-to-five third term, making the last quarter effectively junk time.

Tyren Montebruno was the star of the show for the Centurions with eight goals, while Karl Blade, Michael Knight and David Brierty had a big impact.

The Centurions will face the Belmont Lions on the road at Winter Reserve on Saturday.
