Point Cook estate: Objectors fail to stop 468 new homes

AN extra 468 houses will be built in Point Cook after Wyndham Council approved a development plan for a new housing estate despite objections from residents and neighbouring developers.

Councillors last week approved the housing estate at 333-350 Point Cook Road.

The council received 49 objections from residents concerned about the impact the estate would have on traffic congestion and on school and kindergarten places.

As reported by the Weekly, the estate was opposed by members of the Point Cook Action Group, who last year wrote to the council and called for the application to be rejected.

Resident Alice Osborne said roads in and out of Point Cook were already overcapacity. “Adding any additional vehicles will only further exacerbate this issue, causing more stress to commuters and their families,” she said.

“All the schools in Point Cook are bursting at the seams . . . as a mother of two preschoolers, the threat of further development without further funding for education facilities is of particular concern to our family.”

But in a report to the council, sustainable development director Dean Rochfort said a new school and childcare centre in Saltwater Coast would help address school and kindergarten shortages.

Mr Rochfort also pointed to the council’s upgrade of Sneydes Road and a VicRoads plan to upgrade Point Cook Road, which he said would ease congestion.

Access to the new estate will be via Point Cook Road, but there will also road extensions linking the new estate with Esperance estate to the south and South Shore Gardens estate to the north.
