The day in 2011 when the science centre’s ceiling caved in was, in hindsight, the catalyst for a new direction, mission and vision for Wyndham Central College, says principal Julie Myers.
Formerly known as Galvin Park Secondary College, the school adopted its new name at the start of this year, heralding a raft of exciting changes including a curriculum review and creation of new or refurbished learning spaces.
“Once we received government funding, we saw it as a chance to change so many things,” says Ms Myers. “Staff who had been through a decade of decline wanted a school they could be proud of and the changes are bringing that about.”
The new focus includes the adoption of a rigorous academic curriculum and a changeover from open learning spaces to a more structured classroom environment.
“We are returning to traditional learning areas for teaching English, maths and science. We emphasise good student study habits and organisation of their material which will serve them well in the future — whether they attend university, start a career or take up an apprenticeship. They will leave our school with skills to help them navigate life more successfully.”
A new year 7 classroom centre, refurbished science and food technology centres, updated years 10-12 centre, trade training centre, gym and administration area have begun or are planned.
The college is the first in the Wyndham region to become an AVID school incorporating Advancement by Individual Determination.
“This program imparts confidence and strategies to retain knowledge in the pursuit of all of life’s endeavours,” says Ms Myers.
