ANOTHER piece of Wyndham’s recreation centre funding jigsaw puzzle has fallen into place with the redevelopment project receiving money from the Regional Development Australia Fund.
The federal government will provide Wyndham council with $9 million to help transform the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre.
Prime Minister and Lalor MP Julia Gillard (pictured) announced the funding during a visit to the centre last Friday. “Even the kindest person would say that [it’s] a little bit on the tired side and it is not big enough to meet the needs of our extensively growing community,” she said.
The government’s contribution to the $45 million project follows the council’s decision to set aside $10.9 million in the 2013-14 draft budget and $650,000 announced by the state government in February.
Regional Services and Local Communities Minister Catherine King said the redevelopment would provide a first-class sports centre for the western suburbs.
The redevelopment will take three years to complete and will convert a six-court indoor centre into a 12-court indoor complex, including a large gymnasium, exercise studio, show court, childcare facility and outdoor netball courts.
