Point Cook West land sale a boon and burden, says action group 

THE sale of a 125-hectare site at Point Cook West has come as no surprise to residents.

But Point Cook Action Group spokeswoman Alice Osborne said they were still concerned about the impact 5000 new residents would have on roads and schools already struggling to meet demand.

Perth-based developer the Satterley Property Group bought the parcel of land, which borders Hacketts Road and the Princes Freeway, last week for more than $100 million. There are plans for about 2000 houses.

The state government land is next to the Werribee Employment Precinct, which was announced by Planning Minister Matthew Guy late last year.

The site was sold to help fund vital infrastructure, including the Sneydes Road freeway interchange.

The government committed $32.6 million to the interchange in last month’s state budget, with the remaining $40 million to come from land sales.

Ms Osborne said that despite the group’s concerns, they were aware the sale was important for Point Cook and the Werribee Employment Precinct. “The money will also be for roads and other infrastructure in Hoppers Lane and other parts of Wyndham.”

Altona Labor MP Jill Hennessy said the government would need to invest in more than just roads in Point Cook if the suburb was to expand. She called for improved public transport around Sneydes and Dunnings roads.

As reported by the Weekly, bus services along Sneydes Road were reduced in April after routes were changed to service Williams Landing train station.

Mr Guy said the government knew it had to put infrastructure in place to alleviate some of Wyndham’s problems.
