A WERRIBEE Devils’ late attempt at a dramatic comeback fell short in an 84-83 loss to Waverley Falcons in the Big V basketball men’s championship at Waverley Basketball Stadium on Sunday.
The young Devils trailed by 13 with four minutes left in the last period, but a succession of three pointers – one to Kristian Rocci, followed by two to Jordan Hughes, who had six for the match, and another from Matthew Boland – gave them a sniff.
It took the composure of veteran journeyman Sedale Threatt, a former NBA player with the Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls, Seattle SuperSonics and LA Lakers, to ice the game for the Falcons with five-from-six from the free throw line in the final minute and 10 seconds.
Hughes was the pick of the Devils with 27 points, while Muka Silver finished with a double-double 10 points and 14 rebounds.
In women’s division 2, fast finishing Werribee over-ran Casey in the last quarter to register an impressive 76-71 win at the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre.
Lisa Troyahn starred with a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Elisha Burnette (17 points, six rebounds), Olivia Klaman (11 points), Georgia Perry (10 points) and Emma Coyne (seven assists) played significant roles.
The Devils head into the week off in second spot with an 11-1 record.
