WERRIBEE City has moved into the last eight of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state knockout cup.
The Bees booked their quarter-final spot with a shock 1-0 win over Premier League club Pascoe Vale at Hosken Reserve on Saturday.
The match was an entertaining affair with a fast-paced brand of football displayed by both sides.
Bees goalkeeper Franjo Saric was forced into a number of good saves early on as the Vales pressed.
The Bees, coming into the game on the back of a win over Altona Magic in the league, were not without their own chances.
Striker Leigh Minopoulos forced Vales goalkeeper Stefaan Sardelic into a diving save and the score was locked 0-0 at the break.
The second half was played at the same furious pace, with flankers of both teams creating havoc.
The winning goal didn’t come until stoppage time in the second half when Minopoulos was felled in the penalty box and stepped up to score.
The Bees will click back into league mode on Sunday when they host Eastern Lions at Galvin Park.
In men’s state league 5, Point Cook Jets and Truganina Hornets played a rescheduled game at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday.
The Jets prevailed 2-1 on the back of goals to Cameron Mellor and Joe Spiteri.
David Dennerley netted for the Hornets.
The Jets will host Spring Hills FC at home on Saturday, while the Hornets entertain Sunshine Heights Western Tigers.
In men’s state league 4, Hoppers Crossing will face FC Strathmore fresh off a week’s rest in a bottom-four clash at Grange Reserve on Saturday.
