VFL race opens as finalists slip

THE most predictable thing that can be said about this VFL season is that the next three months are unpredictable.

The nature of the VFL – with its full, partial and non-AFL alignments – makes the art of prediction very difficult.

Last year’s final four – Werribee, Williamstown, Port Melbourne and premiers Geelong – are all in the top eight, but it’s Box Hill and Casey Scorpions who lead the ladder after 10 rounds.

The Tigers came within a kick of a grand final appearance last year. Trailing by 29 points at three-quarter-time, they fought back fiercely but ultimately fell just short of their first VFL grand final since the unsuccessful campaign of 2005.

Much has changed for the Tigers since that game; several other players have moved on.

But the Tigers have become accustomed to list turnover. The VFL calls on clubs to accept movement, adjust and move on.

Werribee went hard in recruiting, picking up former Swan Jarred Moore and Tasmanian Ben Brown among others, while development of younger players has continued unabated.
