ON the eve of a new era for Egypt last week, Muslims gathered at a pre-Ramadan conference in Newport.
Lina Hassan, a Broadmeadows-based aged-care worker with Victorian Arabic Social Services, said everyone had been awaiting news with bated breath.
Last Thursday, Egypt’s president Mohamed Morsi was replaced by a judge, Adli Mansour.
Ms Hassan, of Lebanese background, said the community was hopeful but anxious about Mr Morsi’s ousting.
“We were worried, but it’s now a relief,’’ she said.
Newport Mosque imam Abdullah Al Hawari said the Muslim holy month of fasting was a time for piety, thankfulness and wisdom.
“Be aware of every word you say. If you have a number of bad habits you have accumulated over the whole year, this is the time to get rid of them.”
