MATTHEW Young produced an outstanding 300th game for Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League division 1 on Saturday.
Young, better known as a dour defender for most of his career, showed his worth in a new role on the forward line in the game against Sunshine Kangaroos.
He booted two goals and applied a high level of forward pressure in his milestone game.
“He’s always been known as a back-pocket, tough defender, but now he’s become a forward pocket goal sneak,” Warriors captain Brad Murphy said.
“His forward pressure was outstanding – he would’ve laid 10 tackles, and he kicked two miraculous goals.”

Despite the chilly conditions, a big crowd gathered at Hogans Road Oval to salute Young on his big day.
A banner flapped in the wind under the new electronic scoreboard, reading: “Well done Matt, 300 games.” One of Young’s proud nieces offered a constant reminder that she was there for her uncle’s milestone with a sign made specially for the day. Young had the honour of leading the Warriors on to the field of battle with Murphy relinquishing captaincy duties for a game.
Murphy spoke in glowing admiration of a great clubman.
“He’s the heart and soul of the Hoppers Crossing Football Club,” Murphy said. “He’s the epitome of what everyone at the club should stand for. He’s tough, he’s hard, he’s committed and he’s just everyone’s mate.
“I don’t think you’ll find a person in the world say a bad word about Matthew Young. He loves this footy club more than anything.”
