Wyndham stands firm on slow-growth commitment

WYNDHAM council is standing by its promise to slow down growth, opposing a planning scheme amendment that would have allowed houses to be built in Tarneit’s north.

Councillors last week knocked back a request to adopt the Riverdale precinct structure plan. The plan would have allowed 1107 hectares to be developed between Leakes and Davis roads and the Werribee River. The council said the structure plan did not include plans to limit future land releases to areas near existing key roads.

Councillors last month vowed to limit the number of houses  built in the municipality to 3000 a year.

The council wants future land releases to be conditional on infrastructure being delivered and the creation of local jobs.

Councillors have also opposed a development contribution plan for Wyndham North that specified projects required to provide future residents with access to infrastructure.

The plan was rejected because the council felt its allocated share of road costs was inequitable and the plan did not include adequate funding.

Cr Glenn Goodfellow said the council’s stance told the state government that it had to provide more funds.

“They have to put their hand in their pocket and start giving back tax dollars to residents by spending on infrastructure,” he said.
