Art helps young mums find a place in the world

YOUNG mothers such as Tinika Wharemate-Waiti are using paint, charcoal and stencils to carve out a sense of identity and break down stigma.

Mums in their teens and early 20s have been taking part in an art program run by Werribee Support and Housing and community artist Adam Douglas.

It’s aimed at encouraging self-expression and conveying how having children at a young age has changed their lives.

Youth projects officer Lauren Perry says the young mums have been extremely keen to take on the challenge.

Their work will be displayed in an exhibition at Wyndham’s youth resource centre on August 16.  Details: 9742 6452.
