BMX pair on top of the world

A WYNDHAM BMX club is urging more people to take up the sport after two of its members tasted success at last month’s world championships.

Wyndham Warriors founder Gary Morgan and son Jordan recently returned from the world championships in Auckland, where Gary finished first in the 45-and- over cruiser category.

Jordan overcame a broken foot to finish fifth in the 17-24-year-old men’s competition.

Gary said it was amazing that Jordan placed in the top five young men in the world, given he spent several days riding with an injury.

He has been unable to ride since returning to Werribee.

“It was a great achievement,’’ Gary said.

‘‘We weren’t expecting to do so well.”

Gary began racing in England in 1982 and wanted to continue competing when he moved to Werribee. He founded the Warriors in 2005 after realising that there wasn’t a local club.

Gary says BMX racing is a sport the whole family can enjoy.

“It’s a good family thing –  healthy, competitive and you can take part at any level, any age.”

Gary says the sport allowed people to travel all over the world and test themselves against other riders.

“BMX racing is starting to take off in Wyndham, but we are always looking for new members.”

Wyndham will host the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships later this month.
