Werribee man charged with Hoppers Crossing manslaughter

Police have charged a Werribee man with manslaughter after a shooting in a quiet Hoppers Crossing street last week.

Emergency services were called to Strang Street last Monday where a 30-year-old Wyndham Vale man was found dead on the side of the suburban street by local residents.

Victoria Police brought 22-year old Harley Munt into custody on Wednesday night, charging him with one count of manslaughter.

Mr Munt appeared before an out-of-sessions court hearing where he was remanded in custody to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Last week neighbours had reported hearing two men arguing followed by a loud noise – thought to have been a gunshot – and a car driving off.

Detectives said last week that police were investigating the death in connection to a home burglary and the theft of the 2012 BMW at a house near to where the body was found.

The stolen car belonged to a local tradesman who had been working a night shift and returned home last Monday to discover police surrounding the area and his home ransacked with jewellery, electrical items and a television stolen.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles told media last week: “We can speculate it might be two burglers who have had an argument and one has shot his mate, or his co-accused, or it may not be that.

”It’s very difficult to say, but I think we’re reasonably confident to say that the burglary and the stolen car are now linked to this homicide,” he said.
