Breastfeeding centre celebrates milestone

A Wyndham service supporting mums to breastfeed is celebrating its second birthday.

The Breastfeeding Drop in Centre opened in Werribee in August 2013 to provide mums with a place to seek help and support.

The centre was set up at the Sister Rita Douglas Centre, in Vincent Crescent, Werribee, by the council’s maternal and child health service in response to community calls for better support for breastfeeding mothers.

The centre has helped more than 1000 families since it opened.

Services portfolio holder Councillor Adele Hegedich said the unique service was something Wyndham residents could be proud of.

“The free service has been a wonderful addition to the landscape of family support in Wyndham, providing care for breastfeeding infants, their mothers and families at a time when they need it most,” she said.

“Wyndham’s service has been very popular with families, which highlights the benefits of developing flexible and innovative solutions to address the community’s needs.”

The centre offers breastfeeding support by experienced, qualified lactation consultants and maternal and child health nurses to families with infants of any age.

It is open from 1-4pm from Monday to Thursday, with no appointment necessary.

To mark its second birthday, the centre is hosting an afternoon tea for former and present clients, families and supporters of the service at 4pm on August 18.
