Werribee Devils were unable to overcome a slow start in their encounter with Whittlesea in Big V men’s state championship basketball, losing 77-66.
The Pacers started the match on fire, shooting at a remarkable 70 per cent from the field in the first quarter to open up a 19-point lead.
The second and third terms were even on the scoreboard, with the Devils unable to make significant inroads into the deficit.
They won the final term 19-10, but that wasn’t enough to set up a chance to claim the victory. Aaron McCuin top scored for Werribee with 23 points.
The Devils’ division 1 women’ defeated Mildura 81-67, with Elisha Burnette scoring 30 points.
