There was cause for celebration at Point Cook Football Club at the weekend.
But this time, it wasn’t for a crunching tackle or miraculous goal.
The Bulldogs were instead showing off their hard work, with the club’s junior Victorian Women’s Football League side playing its first home game.
While Point Cook lost to Sunbury, 15.19 (109) to 0.2 (2), head coach Belinda McErvale said the new side’s progress had been pleasing.
“There are a few youth girls’ teams around the area, and I knew that some of them were struggling a little bit for numbers, but we have just kept growing and growing,’’ she said.
“We have got 23 girls in the squad at the moment … they are just always eager to learn and improve each training session. There is a really positive atmosphere around the club.”
First-time coach McErvale, who played for VWFL side Melbourne Uni for more than 10 years, said developing a senior side was high on her priority list.
“It would be great if we could create that senior side, just so the girls have got somewhere to go for that next step.”
McErvale encouraged more girls to become involved in women’s football.
She said some of Point Cook’s players had never kicked a ball before joining the club.
“We have only got a handful of girls who have played before,” she said.
“Most of them haven’t played and this is their first proper season. They are all developing really well.”
