Point Cook trade training centre finds its spark

A new trade training centre was opened in Point Cook last week in a move intended to “electrify” students’ passion for learning.

The $1.5 million facility will be shared by several schools in the Wyndham and Hobsons Bay municipalities and will start by offering training in electro-technology.

Federal Member for Lalor, Joanne Ryan, officially opened the Trade Training Centre at Emmanuel College’s Notre Dame campus.

Ms Ryan said the centre would provide access to the VET system for students in years 9 to 12. It would also help address skill shortages in traditional trades and emerging industries.

“As a former principal I know research shows that students’ pride in their learning environment leads to increased self-esteem, manifesting in improved student outcomes,” Ms Ryan said.

“Investing in education sends a strong message to students, their families and the community about the high value of education.

“Six years ago, when this program started, schools struggled to offer meaningful VET programs. Today, here at Notre Dame, we see 50 students are already benefiting from the electro-technology courses offered at this facility.

“The facility is also being utilised by the students in the VCAL program.”

VET and VCAL co-ordinator at Emmanuel College, Bobbie Evans, said that 95 students were already benefiting from the new centre.

“This is great because we know if we have more kids getting more qualifications, they are more likely to find employment once they leave school,” Mr Evans said.
