Fans dine out on legend’s tales

Two cricketing legends will be at Werribee Football Club luncheons in coming weeks. This Saturday, Werribee’s favourite son, Tigers’ joint number one ticket holder, life member and former Test star Merv Hughes will be a guest of president John Nicol at the lunch for the clash with Coburg.

Hughes is always welcome at any Werribee function and is sure to have a few good stories to tell about his 96 games with the club or his days wearing the baggy green. Saturday is Life Members Day and some of the real stalwarts of the club will be there to see the Tigers take on Coburg.

On July 5, Werribee meets North Ballarat at 1pm at Avalon
Airport Oval. The club is delighted to announce that former Australian Test captain Ricky Ponting will be the guest at the president’s lunch. Ponting is a passionate North Melbourne fan and will get to see Kangaroos players in action for both sides in that game.

Ponting has always been a very keen golfer, and may yet pursue a professional career in the not-too-distant future. He is signed to golfing equipment manufacturer Callaway, and the Callaway Kid, as heard on Radio SEN, is Matt Tudor. Tudor has a very strong Werribee connection – he won the Werribee Open with a record score. His father, Des, also coached
Werribee’s first premiership team in the VFL Reserves in 1987.
