Gifts of clothing, cash lighten Mercy patients’ load

Patients at Werribee Mercy Hospital’s mental health unit will have new clothes to choose from after Wyndham Rotary donated nine boxes of garments.

The boxes, whose contents included pants, shirts, jumpers, socks and underwear, were handed to the hospital earlier this month.

Rotary member Sue Selleck said the club had worked with the Wyndham Salvation Army and Footscray West’s Donation in Kind to source the clothes.

They will be given to patients as they are discharged from the unit.

Ms Selleck said the donation was just one of the ways the club was trying to help make life easier for the hospital’s patients.

She said Wyndham Rotary already provided the hospital with going-home packs for patients, including artworks and financial donations, and had helped maintain the hospital gardens.

“It’s our hospital. We need to do everything we can to help,” Ms Selleck said.

“We want the community to know about the wonderful work that is done at the hospital because I wouldn’t have had a clue if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.”

Mercy Mental Health social worker Daniela Veliz said the patients were thrilled.

“Just having the support from the Rotary Club is essential because every little bit helps,” she said.
