LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: July 10-16

Sinking feeling

More ridiculous things from the government (‘Residents wary of ‘pricey’ Werribee South ferry’, Star Weekly, July 9). It would take longer than 50 minutes. It’s just pollie spin and the price is prohibitive, which everyone knows – a badge to say they have done something for the west yet we all know it equates to nothing useful. Useful – now that would be real governing!

Some may remember a catamaran service operating in the bay a few decades ago. It lasted a few months. This is likely to go the same way, if it ever gets going at all. Upgrade the rail system and use cable cars instead of buses to connect to the stations. That will ease congestion.

Truganina roads need a lift

Truganina roads need to be improved (‘$533 million for Wyndham infrastructure announced’, online, July 10]. Traffic is getting worse. Leaks Road duplication is a must.

We’re going to need billions of dollars to make up for all the funding we haven’t received in the past few decades to pull us more in line with the rest of Melbourne. But this is still a good start.

Unwanted in Wyndham

How dare the state government continue to bully Wyndham council and the residents of Wyndham into accepting these excessive developments (‘Infrastructure funding urged’, Star Weekly, July 9). Every day the ghettos of Wyndham grow. This is yet another housing development that Wyndham does not need, forced on us by the state government just because it can – so it can invest profits elsewhere instead of back into Wyndham. How many times do we need to be reminded that with well above 5000 properties for sale or rent in Wyndham, we do not need or want more new housing here?

If the state and federal governments will not pay for all the shortfall in infrastructure for any development here, then it should not go ahead. It’s great that the council is taking a stand but ultimately the state government can just over-ride it and do whatever it wants. This flawed system needs to change.

A roundabout way of spending

Stop paying 70-grand for the “design” of a roundabout (‘Rates cap a $64m blow to Wyndham’, Star Weekly, July 9). It’s round = O. Now where’s my money?

Gavin Poyner, via Facebook

They only spent $750,000 of our money fixing the landscaping at the civic centre when it wasn’t broken. So maybe they need to have rate rises capped. Everybody is hurting and has to tighten their belts, including our elected representatives.
