Decisions to be made in the next few months will determine whether the Werribee central commercial area will be expanded to become the main shopping centre or be “dumped” in favour of a new centre in another location. Werribee Shire’s planning consultants told a public meeting that there was every potential for a rival shopping centre to spring up and dominate the local shopping scene.

The west is distinguished from the rest of Melbourne by much higher proportions of families with children, says a new study called the Western Regional Social Profile. It shows there are more complete families – head, spouse, and children – in the west than elsewhere in Melbourne or the country regions of Victoria.

July 6, 1994

‘‘Freakish’’ and ‘‘tragic’’ are the words police used to describe a horror road accident on the Westgate Freeway that killed a Werribee man, 27. The man, was on his way to work about 3am on June 28 when he collided with a stolen, early-model Holden being driven on the wrong side of the road by a Lower Templestowe man, 37. Police said both men were killed instantly.

The Supreme Court has ruled the Wyndham council appeal process, which condemned a showdog to die, denied its owner natural justice. Hoppers Crossing’s Matthew Gubbins has been fighting for the life of his champion American pitbull terrier Jock since January, when the council seized the animal following a New Year’s Day attack on three horses being ridden by young girls.
