Visitors to Wyndham could soon have another accommodation option, with the council considering an application for a 62-bed hotel in Point Cook.
If approved, the hotel will be built on Wallace Avenue, Point Cook, next to the Phoenix Hotel.
The proposed development would also include a function centre, caretaker’s house, office buildings and provision for a swimming pool.
A report to Monday’s council meeting said it was anticipated the function centre would hold between 350 and 700 visitors and would operate until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.
It is planned the hotel will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will be able to accommodate between 62 and 124 people.
The report said the development would complement existing businesses in Wallace Avenue.
Cr Glenn Goodfellow said the proposal would benefit visitors and the community.
“This is a good win for the City of Wyndham,” he said. “It is an investment into the city … and shows that people are seeing Wyndham as a place to invest. This will actually provide employment for the local area.
“We all know the difficulty people have finding accommodation when there’s a big function in the City of Wyndham.
“We are starting to put some [more] accommodation into the area and this will be accessible by road and rail, with Williams Landing station just over the road overpass.
“It will also provide a function centre which is sorely needed in the City of Wyndham.”
Before the council can consider the planning application, it must ask Planning Minister Matthew Guy to rezone the site.
The land is zoned as industrial, which prohibits a residential hotel from being built in the area.
