Athletes see the light

New lighting at Victoria University’s athletics track in Hoppers Crossing has made winter training that little bit easier for athletics club Western Athletics.

Wyndham council recently erected three extra light poles at the university track – two of them along the back straight – to improve visibility for throwers and runners alike at evening training sessions.

The work, part of the council’s 2014-15 sports facility budget, also included replacing lights on the existing poles and redirecting the lights to minimise shadows.

Western Athletics club president Adrian Jeffkins said he and all the club members were delighted with the improvements.

He said the new lighting was of International Association of Athletics Federation standard and had greatly enhanced the centre and paved the way for possible evening competition.

Wyndham chief executive Kerry Thompson said the council funded the new lighting in recognition of the growth and popularity of athletics in Wyndham.
