Werribee Open Range Zoo is set to get a few visits from the stork– not literally.
It was announced on Friday 13 February that three members of the zoo’s elephant herd are pregnant.
Num-Oi, Dokkoon and Mali have had their pregnancies confirmed and are expected to deliver calves in about April 2027.
The nine-member herd moved to Werribee last year and were settled in the newly established, 21-hectare Elephant Trail, which was built by the state government at a cost of about $88 million.
Designed to support the elephants’ needs while creating a close visitor experience, the Elephant Trail features extensive walking trails and shaded habitats that reflect the elephants’ natural environment.
The trail gives the herd, which includes three calves already, the space needed to thrive and allow stronger social bonds and lifelong high quality health.
It is also bigger than the entirety of Melbourne Zoo, where they previously lived.
