Bragging rights on the line

It’s a battle for top four spots and bragging rights in the Point Cook derby in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Roy Picone Shield.

Both Point Cook Centrals and Point Cook are in the top four as the season heads to the pointy end.

It was the Warriors that won the first battle between the two sides, but it’s the second-placed Sharks that are six points ahead of the fourth-placed Warriors as the season resumed after the Christmas break.

On Saturday, the Sharks made 9-251 after winning the toss and decided to bat.

Guransh Singh top scored with 72 at the top of the order, while Prashanth Ramkumar scored 56 coming in at number three.

Suresh Thelge took four wickets for the Warriors, while captain-coach Shafraz Mohamed took 3-61.

The Warriors finished the day at 1-25 off three overs.

Max Rouvray has the wickets for the Sharks.

Nicholas Peacock (seven not out) and Nivain Gamanayake (four not out) will resume on day two for the Warriors.

Meanwhile in the Clark Shield, Bellbridge is keen to get some wins on the board to lock in a top four spot.

Entering the second half of the season in fourth spot, the Bears resumed against Barkly St Uniting which sits in sixth spot and a game behind.

The Bears made 191 as they were bowled out in the 73rd over.

Skipper Dillon Hinge top scored with 83 for the Bears.

The Dragons will resume at 1-5. Henro Dias has the wicket.

Elsewhere, Werribee Centrals will be hoping for early wickets on day two against Sunshine Heights.

The Centurions made 137 before being bowled out.

Shuvro Saha, who came in at number 10, top scored with 27, while number nine Daniel Williams finished 25 not out.

Sunshine Heights finished day one at 2-30. Gamagedara Dhanuka Nimmana and Usman Ashraf are the wicket takers for the Centurions.

The Centurions are looking for their third win of the season and keep alive their small finals hopes.

It was a shortened first day for Seabrook and Laverton with just 37 overs bowled.

Laverton will resume at 2-139.

Kamaljeet Sandhu is 60 not out, while skipper Karandeep Singh is 24 not out.

In the Russell Pollock Shield, it wasn’t the start to the new year that Wyndham Vale was hoping for.

Without a win so far, the Vales are keen to turn their fortunes around after the break.

Facing ladder leaders Roxburgh Park, the Vales were able to bowl them out for 257.

Bailey Rossiter took four wickets for the Vales.

The Vales will resume at 1-13 after facing 12 overs.

Michael Fry faced 36 balls without scoring and will resume with Jake Rippon, who is also yet to open his account, on day two of the contest.
