Free youth basketball clinic

A free basketball tournament for young people aged 12-20 will take place at Eagle Stadium in Werribee on Thursday 22 January.

Nothing But Net will run as a one-day clinic and is designed to focus on skill development, teamwork, and fun within a positive community environment.

From 10am-3pm, participants will receive guided coaching, take part in skill-building drills and wrap up the day with a series of friendly games.

Free giveaways will be in play, a barbeque for all to refuel with and a DJ will be on site to keep the energy up.

Nothing But Net is a combined initiative between Junibi Wyndham, Wyndham Youth Services and Helping Hoops Basketball.

The team at Junubi is made up of passionate youth workers, project officers, and leaders from South Sudanese backgrounds.

Junubi youth leader Akol Magok said those who come along will be taught the fundamentals of the sport.

“They will be taught how to play as a team, how to dribble, how to shoot and how to coordinate the game,” Mr Magok said.

He also said it is a particularly good platform for strangers to become friends off the court and help each other build a stronger community.

“It is another way young people can interact together, share different thoughts and opinions,” Mr Magok said.

“Basketball is a vehicle for young people to become closer, to understand each other, to build friendships, and to also develop their skills together as they grow up in the same neighbourhood.

“Basketball is one of those tools that connects young people faster than anything.”

Registration for the event begins at 10am.
