Get in gear for mental health

It’s time to get into gear for the local retro motoring show of the year.

The Wyndham Retro Motor Show will showcase the best local, vintage rides and live entertainment and activities for the community to participate in.

While car enthusiasts and families enjoy the day, vital funds will be raised for mental health care at Werribee Mercy Hospital.

Maria, Isabella, Giordano and Danny D’Mello started the event to encourage those who may be experiencing mental health struggles to seek help.

“Most people have been affected by mental health, it is a concern in a community and we just want to raise awareness for everyone out who may be going through a challenging time,” Maria said.

“Although it is uncomfortable to talk about, there are people that you can speak to in the community such as friends, family and professionals without having to publicise it.“

She encouraged families in particular to come along, make a day of it and stay connected with each other.

One of the driving forces behind the event was vintage car coordinator Leo Notarianni, who has worked tirelessly to gather the vintage rides and to curate a memorabilia exhibition.

Mr Notarianni, who has had formal training in mental health care, has helped bring car shows all across Victoria to life in the name of various health causes.

“I believe it is imperative for the sufferer and their families that they know there is support and to increase the understanding of mental illness,” he said.

“Over the years, there has been a large reduction in the stigma, which gives people the hope that they can live a more rewarding and fruitful life while living with their conditions.”

He also said a large part of getting the show on the road involved consisted of tailoring the marketing to car clubs all across the state to ensure they got on board.

The show will be held at the Werribee Racing club between 11am-4pm on Sunday, October 19.
