Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding multiple car fires at businesses in Laverton and Mentone.
Emergency services were first called to the intersection of Nepean Highway and Swanston Street in Mentone following reports a car fire had spread to a business about 3.20am.
Authorities were then called to Triholm Avenue in Laverton after reports multiple vehicles had been set alight about 3.40am.
Police have been told in the second incident a person believed to have been involved was seen fleeing the scene partially on fire.
Several people were seen smashing the windows of the cars before they were set alight.
The offenders left the scene in what has been described as a white vehicle.
At this early stage the fires, which are believed linked, are being treated as suspicious.
Police are investigating and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
