Cross carefully in wet

Drivers across Wyndham are being urged to take extra precautions when driving in wet weather conditions.

With the new school term underway, mayor Mia Shaw said that council is most concerned about pick-up and drop-off times.

“Pedestrians, including students and carers, often rush to get out of the rain, which can lead to risky behaviour such as running across roads or stepping out from between parked cars,” Cr Shaw said.

In addition to increased foot traffic, she said there tends to be an increase of vehicles around schools at these times.

“We also see an increase in vehicle drop-offs and pick-ups during wet weather, which adds to the congestion and risk,” she said.

Cr Shaw reminded students and families to always cross at school crossings and follow the directions of crossing supervisors.

“If you are a student or carer walking home or to a car, it’s even more important to cross at a school crossing and listen to the crossing supervisor during rainy weather,” she said.

“Drivers also need to be extra cautious — wet roads reduce braking ability, and children can behave unpredictably.”

There are several ways students can protect themselves, such as standing back from the road and waiting for the crossing supervisors whistle, and not bouncing or throwing balls near traffic.

Students are also strongly recommended to dismount their bikes or scooters and walk them across the road.
