Transport Minister Terry Mulder last week revealed a preferred route to link Avalon Airport with the existing train track between Melbourne and Geelong.
The rail link formed part of the government’s 2010 election platform.
Mr Mulder conceded that with only five flights a day at the airport, the rail link was some time away, and was unable to give an opening date.
However, he said the Avalon project – at about $200 million – was relatively cheap and simple compared to the major work needed to build the proposed Melbourne Airport rail link.
