Good News Power Basketball Club celebrated Children’s Week with a ‘Beats and Baskets’ disco on Saturday, October 26.

Held in partnership with the state government, the club welcomed all of Wyndham’s children to dress up in their disco attire, hit the dance floor and groove to classics like the Nutbush and Macarena.

Vice president Sarah Sherwood discussed the week’s significance.

“Children’s Week really embodies the inclusive, enjoyable nature that we endeavour to uphold, enabling a positive environment where all children can have the opportunity to flourish, both on and off the court”, she said.

“We often quote ‘it is for the kids’, and as a junior sports club, we believe we have a large responsibility in providing children a home away from home.”

This year’s theme of ‘children have the right to a clean and safe environment’ is a sentiment near and dear to the Tarneit club.

Describing what a clean and safe environment looks like, Ms Sherwood said it was a place that “enables children to be themselves, fearless of judgment, harm or concern.”

“This speaks to the physical, social and cultural elements of the environment, where sustainable, clean areas are accessible, but are also inclusive,” she said.

“Children are an integral asset to our community, bringing positivity, curiosity and excitement with energy towards everything they do.

“It is important that we provide children with the opportunity for them to feel celebrated, sparking their enthusiasm to further develop their self-confidence and personal growth.”

Children’s Week was held between October 19-27 and is a national initiative to celebrate the rights and achievements of children.
