Jaidyn Kennedy talks to Wyndham Central College assistant principal Rebecca Sandlant about living and working in Wyndham.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

I’ve lived in Werribee since I was three, growing up and going to school in the area. Throughout my school years, I was actively involved in sports, which fostered a deep connection with the community. Today, I proudly work as an assistant principal, guiding the next generation of students. Beyond my professional role, I like to give back to the community that shaped me. I volunteer with several local sporting clubs, helping to nurture the same sense of belonging and support that I experienced growing up. Werribee has been, and continues to be, the heart of my life and work.

What is your connection to Wyndham?

As I mentioned above, I have grown up in Werribee and am now raising my own family here, my husband Tim and children Cooper and Peyton. My family has been involved in local football, netball, cricket, basketball, gymnastics and swimming clubs and we have always tried to do our part. We work, and the kids go to school in the local community.

What do you like about where you live?

Werribee has changed so much over the 40 years I’ve lived here, evolving from a quiet town into a thriving, diverse community. Despite the growth and development, the strong sense of community and connection remains, which is what I love most about it. The balance between modern amenities and natural spaces, along with the welcoming atmosphere, makes Werribee a place I’m proud to call home.

Where is your favourite place to spend time?

My favourite place to spend time in Werribee is the Werribee Mansion. I love the peaceful surroundings and the beautiful gardens. I often picnic with my family and have made great memories. There’s something special about the history, nature and relaxation it brings

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you?

I have recently been awarded some awards, a 2023 School Sport Victoria Recognition Award for services to school sport, 2023 Victorian Secondary School Sports Outstanding Teacher Award, 2023 Victorian Sport Award for Innovative Project, and a 2023 finalist for Netball Victoria’s Teacher of the Year, all that have all been an unexpected honour. I’m humbled by the recognition and grateful for the support of colleagues, sporting community members and students who made these achievements possible.

What, if anything, would you change about where you live?

With Werribee’s growing population, the roads haven’t always kept up. If I could change one thing, it would be to reduce traffic congestion, making it easier and smoother for everyone to get around.
