It’ll soon be easier to see after dark in Werribee South with Wyndham council receiving a $150,000 grant from the state government to improve lighting in the area.
The grant from the Department of
Environment, Energy and Climate Action has been awarded to Wyndham council under the Coastal and Public Access and Risk Grants Program.
The funds will pay for new lighting to be installed along paths near Werribee South beach and the Werribee South boat ramp, improving night time access for activities such as walking, running, dog walking, cycling and skating.
Wyndham mayor Jennie Barrera said the grant was timely as better lighting in the area was badly needed.
“The existing lighting at Werribee South with ageing light fittings and deteriorating
electrical cabling has come to the end of its lifecycle. The funding of new lighting
infrastructure is welcomed,” Cr Barrera said.
The need for upgraded lighting in Werribee South was identified during community consultation for a recent master plan for the area, with safety, especially for women, and the risk of collision in dark sections of the path, considered the main reasons why.
Along with funding for new lighting, Cr Barrera was also pleased with the type of lighting to be installed in Werribee South.
“The use of wildlife friendly solar lighting will reduce environmental impacts of path
lighting on coastal wildlife and not disturb the native flora and fauna and help to
reduce carbon emissions.”
Point Cook MP Mathew Hilakari highlighted the state government’s role in funding the upgrade.
“The support of the Labor State Government for better lighting at Werribee South Beach will increase usage of this much loved and beautiful community space,” he said.
