It’s a been a big few days for Wyndham’s possum’s.
The cute and cuddly, though occasionally annoying, native marsupials will benefit from a funding grant awarded to a local wildlife retreat by the state government.
Last week, Wyndham’s Ringtail Possum Retreat received $2,456 in funding in latest round of the government’s Wildlife Rehabilitator program which supports wildlife shelter operators and foster carers.
The Ringtail Possum Retreat was among 34 wildlife shelters across Victoria to share in grants of up to $3000.
State Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos said wildlife shelters and foster carers were crucial for the health of native animal populations.
“These grants are about supporting and recognising our dedicated volunteers who selflessly give their time and expertise to help sick, injured and orphaned wildlife,” he said.
Those wanting to know more about how to create healthier habitats for local possum species should go to Wyndham Park on Wednesday morning where Ringtail Possum Retreat carer Jacqui Middleton will conduct an information session.
Ms Middleton will explain how possums are threatened by deforestation, cars, cats, dogs and foxes and provide tips on how to give them a helping hand.
A teaching artist from the Possum Magic stage show will also be there to conduct drama activities and explore the story, characters and themes of Possum Magic.
The event takes place from 10am to 12pm on Wednesday January 24.
