Pallas remains treasurer

Werribee MP Tim Pallas will continue as Victorian treasurer after new premier Jacinta Allan announced her first cabinet on Monday.

Mr Pallas remains treasurer, Minister for Industrial Relations and Minister for Economic Growth, despite failing in a bid to become deputy leader following the resignation of Daniel Andrews last week.

Mr Pallas pursued the deputy position in an attempt to keep both leadership positions within the Socialist Left faction, however later withdrew to allow Niddrie MP Ben Carroll to be elected unopposed.

Mr Carroll, who has been named the new Education Minister in the reshuffle, had earlier aborted his attempt to succeed Mr Andrews as premier, allowing Ms Allan to assume the role.

Mr Pallas has been treasurer since Labor won office in 2014 and has been in parliament since 2006.

Despite speculation he could follow his close friend and colleague, Mr Andrews, and resign, the 63 year old has committed to staying in parliament.

Western Region MLC Ingird Stitt is the new Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Ageing and Minister for Mulitcultural Affairs, joining Mr Pallas and Melton MP Steve McGhie as the only other representatives for the outer western suburbs in cabinet.

Mr McGhie will continue his role of cabinet secretary.

No other Wyndham MPs were named as ministers or parliamentary secretaries.

The new cabinet was sworn in on Monday afternoon.

Cade Lucas.
