It’s by far the most famous building in Wyndham and its grounds regularly host thousands of people for festivals and events, but the inside of Werribee Mansion remains largely hidden from view.
However, that is set to change this Sunday when the doors of Werribee Mansion will be thrown open to the public as part of Parks Victoria’s Open House Melbourne event.
Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the mansion’s architecture, art and history, while musicians and performers in historic costumes will provide entertainment.
Parks Victoria Senior Heritage Adviser Kim Wilson said the open house event offered a rare opportunity to step inside one of the state’s grandest and most mysterious homes.
“We expect many who visit Werribee Park Mansion on Sunday 30 July will be first time
visitors,” Ms Wilson said.
“The mansion has some intriguing features and a fascinating history. To this day, we can’t definitively confirm the identity of its architect.”
Werribee Mansion was completed in 1877 for the Chirnside family and constructed from basalt and sandstone in Italianate Renaissance Revival style.
Up to 1500 people are expected to visit the mansion on Sunday, with entry and on-site parking free of charge.
