Over 200 diving offences were recorded in Wyndham across the King’s Birthday weekend, the worst figures in Melbourne’s north and west.
The offences, including drink driving, speeding, mobile phone use and unregistered vehicles were detected by police as part of Operation Regal, a road safety initiative conducted over the long weekend.
A whopping 97 speeding offences occurred in Wyndham, double the Macedon Ranges which was next highest at 48 and more than all other western suburbs council areas combined
Nine drink drivers were discovered in Wyndham, twice the number in neighbouring Hobsons Bay and Melton, while mobile phone and disobeying sign offences were also substantially higher than nearby.
14 vehicles were impounded by police which was also more than any other council area across the northern and western fringe.
Overall, Operation Regal detected more than 6500 offences statewide, a 15 per cent increase on 2022.
“This is really disappointing as it indicates that many motorists are continuing to take risks on our roads,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner Road Policing, Martin O’Brien.
Victoria’s road toll stands at 143, a 34 per cent increase compared to this time last year.
