Rotary Club of Werribee members and business representatives teed off for a good cause last week, raising about $25,000 for cancer research.
More than 125 players from the club and local businesses took to the Werribee Park Golf Course as part of its annual charity golf day on Friday, March 10, with more than 140 then enjoying a formal lunch and presentation.
The club has been hosting an annual charity golf day for more than 35 years.
Club president Ian Hovey said the event was a “fabulous” success for the club.
“As usual, we got a full field of players on the course,” he said.
The club has planned to donate the funds raised to cancer research conducted by Victoria University Werribee campus lead medical research scientist Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos.
She and her team has undertaken an extensive body of work over the past 30 years.
Professor Apostolopoulos has been the driving force behind the creation of various vaccines and drugs to tackle a number of health issues, including breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancer, with her work also including research into other diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
Mr Hovey said Professor Apostolopoulos and her team were doing “wonderful work”.
“This will go a long way to helping them do more significant research,” he said.
The team from Werribee Sand Soil & Mini Mix took out the top honours on the day for the second time in the past three years.
Mr Hovey said a team of volunteers led by Ross Conley, as well as local sponsors, contributed to the event’s success.
“We have some great volunteers and great help,” he said.
