The Werribee Giants walk away from the Baseball Victoria summer league 3 west women’s grand final beaten, but proud.
With the team only two seasons old, for most of the squad it was their first finals series let alone first grand final series.
After a slow start the Giants were able to match it with Fitzroy, but the damage had already been done on Saturday.
Fitzroy claimed the premiership with a 17-8 win.
Giants coach Jacob Sigismondi said overall there were plenty of positive signs to take out of the performance and the season as a whole.
“We lost the game in the first innings,” he said. “We didn’t score any runs and they scored seven.
“From there it was 10-8 and it was a really close game. They had just gotten away early and we couldn’t get it back.”
Sigismondi said Fitzroy’s pitcher had started really well and made it hard to score runs and put the pressure back on them.
He said Jess Curnow continued her good form and was the standout for them on the day according to Sigismondi.
While the Giants didn’t get the win, Sigismondi said they walk away from the season with their heads held high.
“I couldn’t be prouder in them for getting there,” he said. “We should be there again next year again if we continue to improve.
“I hope they’ve taken a lot from the season and take a little bit of pride, that they’ve achieved more than they set out to at the start of the season.”
Sigismondi said the aim next season was to continue the development of the side, while looking to build some more depth.
“Hopefully we’ll have two teams next season,” he said. “We wanted to have that this year, but we didn’t have enough players at the come and try days.”
