Wyndham Council has approved a planning permit for a multi-storey specialist disability accommodation building in Werribee.
To be used for community care purposes, the building will be located at 12 Pyke Street and will be subject to National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding and managed by a registered housing association.
At an ordinary council meeting on Tuesday, February 14, councillor Heather Marcus said the apartments would be “very beneficial“ for the city.
“It’s long overdue…we’ve got no accommodation for these people,” she said.
“I’ve just had a case where I couldn’t get accommodation and I had to put the person up in my own house.
“I’m very please to see you’ve included an ensuite for every single solitary apartment, which is really good because they need that dignity.
“It’s good to think now that we’re looking to the younger people as well…cause I don’t want to see younger people [having to go into] aged care.”
The building will provide 21 rooms for short term stays ranging from one to 30 days and medium-term stays ranging from 31 to 90 days.
The facility will also provide residents access to occupational therapy and allied health services, with a maximum of eight staff working on the premises at one time.
Cr Josh Gilligan said the development would provide a “great opportunity“ to bring “high quality skills“ into the municiaplity.
“It’s clearly in demand,“ he said.
“I support this and really reiterate that this is the type of application we do want to see…development that perhaps isn’t just your stock standard apartments but can be equivalent mixed use.”
The building will also include a rehabilitation gym, nurse station, sensory garden, on-site overnight assistance room and a family room with kitchenette and communal terrace rooftop.
