Western Athletics had a successful Athletics Victoria state relay championships on Saturday, coming away with five medals.
The club started the day with two club records being set, before another one later in the day as the athletes took their game to the next level.
The under-18 men’s 4 x 100 metre team of Jaydon Nti, Jeremy Nti, Marcus Sneyders and Frankleen Newah-Jarfoi won gold.
Western Athletics president Peter Cashin said time broke multiple records within the club and even a state record.
“They came first in a scorching time of 41.45 seconds, not only beating the under-18 and under-20 club record of 42.60 secs set earlier this year, but also the long-standing open club record of 41.87 seconds set in 1996.
“It also happens to be the new Victorian club record for the under-18 4 x 100 metres.”
The club started the day with the open men’s 4 x 1500 metre team of Nathan Pearce, Ethan McMinimee, Liam Cashin and Cody Shanahan won bronze in a time of 16:13.59, beating the old club record of 17:39.77 set in 2005.
The under-16 women’s medley team of Holly Gardiner, Niharika Kaushik, Honour Tobin and Lucy Cleveland were next up and won silver in a time of 4:10.01, beating the old record set in 2010.
Cashin said the success continued through the day.
“We won another bronze medal was won by our under16 men’s 4 x 400 metre team of Ethan Sneyders, Jackson Wright, Matthew Musarra and Armeet Dhaliwal in a time of 3:44.76.
“Allan Cook ran the first leg of a 60-plus 4 x 800 metre team formed by four clubs that set a new Australian record of 9:46.33, beating the old record of 10:09.32.
“We finished off with our open Men’s 4×100 metre team of Chilo Idriss, Brayden Portelli, Pascal Basioni and Endale Mekonnen claiming silver in the terrific time of 41.58 seconds and also beating the old open 4 x 100 metre club record of 41.87 seconds.”
The under-18 women’s medley team finished ninth, the under-18 medley team finished in sixth place, as did the open men’s medley team.
The 40-plus women’s 4 x400 metre team of Cheryl Beveridge, Janice Hodgart, Carolyn Huell and Cath Cleveland came 4th and the 40-plus women’s 4 x 100 metre team of Cath Cleveland, Cheryl Beveridge, Janice Hodgart and Jo Francken came fifth.
The under-18 women’s team of Amber Shield, Sarah McInerney, Nicole Wong and Nadia Wong came fifth
